Christchurch Attractions is a locally-owned and operated business offering iconic experiences in the city, including the Christchurch Tram, Christchurch Gondola, Punting on the Avon, the Botanic Gardens Tour and the Tramway Restaurant, and is committed to operating in a sustainable way in all aspects of our business.

Sustainable Operations

Our actions include the attractions being either electric-powered (the Christchurch Tram, Christchurch Gondola, Botanic Gardens Tour and the Tramway Restaurant) or people-powered (Punting on the Avon) to reduce their environmental impact.

Additional actions include:

  • Using an electricity provider offering 100% renewable energy
  • Implementing recycling programmes at all attractions and encouraging guests to participate in recycling
  • Offering only digital photos to reduce waste
  • Offering flexible shifts and hours where possible
  • Offering ongoing training and development opportunities for our staff to support their development
  • Incorporating our local culture and stories into our Christchurch Tram, Punting on the Avon and Botanic Gardens Tour commentaries and in our Christchurch Gondola’s Christchurch Discovery Ride storytelling
  • Reusing materials in our Christchurch Tram shed, including carpet and rags

Caring For The Environment

Our environmental engagement includes:

  • Ongoing native tree planting at the Christchurch Gondola in conjunction with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Hillary Award and the Te Tapuwae o Rakau Trust with over 100 trees planted so far and more plantings planned for the future
  • Regular river cleaning on a monthly basis at Punting on the Avon
  • Educating guests at Punting on the Avon about what not to feed the native wildlife

Supporting Our Community

Our community engagement includes:

  • Supporting local events and fundraisers in the community with donations of tickets and reduced pricing
  • Supporting local charities with donations of tickets for their clients
  • An annual Christmas Appeal collecting food for the Christchurch City Mission foodbank in exchange for complimentary Christchurch Tram tickets
  • An annual winter appeal collecting blankets for The Salvation Army in exchange for complimentary Christchurch Tram tickets
  • Supporting the Heritage Tramways Trust as the maintenance supplier for our Christchurch Tram cars and Punting on the Avon punts
  • Supporting and engaging in local events including Bread & Circus, Christmas carols on the Christchurch Tram & Punting on the Avon in conjunction with The Salvation Army, PRIDE in conjunction with The Christchurch Foundation and major events in conjunction with ChristchurchNZ

Qualmark’s Sustainable Tourism Business (STB) Criteria are recognised by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) for being equivalent to the GSTC Industry Criteria.
