The Christchurch Trams offer a unique experience combining history and sightseeing on board one of the city’s best loved attractions.

Perfect for all ages, the all-day ticket allows you to hop on and off the restored heritage trams to explore the central city, and the live commentary from your local driver offers fascinating insights. Purchase your tickets online, on board, or at the Booking Office at stop 1.

Tram Route & Stops

The full circuit takes approximately 50 minutes to complete with trams operating every 10-20 minutes. There are 18 stops en route which the trams travel through in order.

There are plenty of highlights to explore: the Botanic Gardens, Tūranga, and Margaret Mahy Playground are must-visit spots for families; and the many retail stores and eateries at The Terrace, Riverside Market, SALT District, Arts Centre, and New Regent Street offer fantastic shopping and dining options for all. For frequent visitors, we recommend our great-value Tram & Gondola Annual Pass – perfect for locals!

Our Tramway Restaurant departs from Cathedral Junction at 7:30pm daily (excluding public holidays) and at 5pm on selected dates. Bookings are essential.

Child Ages

Child age is 5-15 years inclusive with infants under 5 years of age. Family tickets are valid for two adults and up to three children. Children must be accompanied on the trams at all times by a paying adult. For safety reasons, we allow one adult to supervise up to five children or infants aged 15 years and under. As in any city street, you must keep children safe in traffic.

Please note outside seats are not weatherproof.

Two to three small, folded prams can be accommodated on board each of the larger trams (smaller trams are not able to accommodate prams so as not to block access to the aisles). Several trams also have pram hooks available to secure up to two prams to the exterior of the trams.

Getting Here

There are plenty of on-street and off-street parking options along the Tram route: see Christchurch City Council’s website for parking locations.

For those arriving by bus, the Christchurch Bus Interchange is a one-block walk from stops 5 and 8, and the Manchester Street Super Stop is a one-block walk from stop 1 in Cathedral Junction.

Mobility Access

Two of our Trams are able to accommodate up to two manual wheelchairs on board at one time using the wheelchair hoist located in Cathedral Junction (please note that the maximum safe working load is 220kg, and the hoist is unable to lift motorised and electric wheelchairs). We recommend phoning ahead on the day on 03 366 7830 to check whether wheelchair-accessible trams are operating and what time they will be departing from Cathedral Junction, as there may be longer wait times for these trams on busy days.

We took the grandkids on the tram and loved it so much we went back and exchanged our tickets for an annual pass that also includes the gondola. We live in town, so we can hop on, hop off any time. Just love it!

Why don’t all Auckland City councillors go to Christchurch and experience an efficient and knowledgeable tram network and then CONTINUE the work previously started on the Britomart tram restoration. To progress this for Auckland City is an absolute no brainer decision.

This is a must do activity in Christchurch. We initially thought we would go on a ride to sightsee and then continue with our day. We were so impressed with the stops and tour guides that we spent the whole day hopping on and off at various attractions. We were thankful to the ticket office for allowing us to leave our pram with them. We hopped on with our 9 month old in a baby carrier and it was so easy to get around.The trams were nostalgic and fun and the operators were entertaining and knowledgeable. This was the highlight of our trip.

Loved the tram drive around to see and hear the history of the city. We waited as 3 tram passed us because it was full. There was a cruise ship and the city was busy that day. Otherwise we enjoyed the tram ride.
