Weekend guide to Lyttelton

The quirky little harbour town of Lyttelton is a great spot to explore with scenic walks, cute stores and delicious food. Here are our top picks for places to see on a weekend visit:

Food – you’ll be spoilt for choice with some seriously tasty offerings for every budget. Lyttelton Bakery & Glamour Cake is a must for cheaper fare: their famously decadent doughnuts and cakes are amazing and we hear the pies made on site are pretty good too. Super is a great spot for some tasty Asian-fusion dishes for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Award-winning restaurant Roots has a higher price point but offers a fantastic degustation experience with optional matching wines for lunch or dinner – ideal for a special occasion. And ever-popular Lyttelton Coffee Co. is on hand for those in need of an expertly-made coffee.

Shopping – check out the Lyttel Kiwi Gift Shop for handmade giftware, homeware, clothing and more. Henry Trading is also a great place to pick up natural skincare, ceramics and other giftware. London Street Books is a must for second hand book lovers, and you can’t miss the Lyttelton Farmers Market if you’re in town on a Saturday morning (make sure you arrive early to find a car park!)

Walking tracks – there are plenty of great walking tracks in the hills around Lyttelton. The heritage Timeball Station tower is a short walk from the centre of Lyttelton, and the Bridle Path and Major Hornbrook Track both stretch from Lyttelton to the top of the Port Hills and connect with the Crater Rim Walkway. For an easier trek catch the Christchurch Gondola to the top of the Port Hills and take in the spectacular views before walking down into Lyttelton (public bus #28 makes a stop at the Gondola carpark after leaving Lyttelton).

With plenty to see and do Lyttelton is a great place to while away some time at the weekend!
